There Is Still Such a Flower

Submitted by Sara Rosenfeld, Montreal, who writes that the song was popular among the Jewish youth of Poland before World War II.

Lyrics

When the golden sun goes down,
I steal away quietly
to the valley where my flower is blooming,
I see her constantly, everywhere.
The last beams of sunlight fall, like saphires,
pure gold, everywhere, all around.
The woods sing me a Song of Songs,
my flower bows her head to me.

Aha, aha– a breeze sings in the valley.
Aha, aha– sings to me for the last time.

There is still such a flower,
whose beauty no one knows,
I love her always, secretly,
and she, me, silently.

When the golden sun wakes up,
the valley says to me: “Run away,
back there, where you once were.
No one must see you here.”
The stream flows to water the forest,
wet crowns of trees are all around,
the wind sings me a Song of Songs,
and my flower bows her head to me.

Ven di goldn zun fargeyt,
Farganve ikh zikh shtilerheyt,
Dort in tol vu s’rut mayn blum,
lkh ze zi shtendik umetum.
Faln letste shtraln vi shafirn,
Gingoldene shtraln rund un arum.
Zingt der vald far mir a shir-hashirim,
Beygt dos kepele far mir mayn blum.

Aha, aha – zingt a vintele in tol,
Aha, aha- zingt far mir tsum letstn mol.

Refrain:
Es iz nokh faran aza blum,
Vos keyner veyst nit ir sheynkeyt,
lkh lib zi shtendik in geheym,
Zi mikh shtum.

Ven di goldn zun vakht oyf,
Zogt tsu mir der tol: – Antloyf,
Dort vu bist a mol geven,
Es darf dikh keyner do nit zen,
Loyft dos taykhele dem vald ontrinken,
Nase beymer kroynen rund un arum,
Zingt der vint tsu mir a shir-hashirim,
Beygt dos kepele far mir mayn blum.

Aha, aha – zingt a vintele in tol,
Aha, aha – zingt far mir tsum letstn mol.

Songs of Generations: New Pearls of Yiddish Song

The Songs of Generations: New Pearls of Yiddish Song anthology comprises songs that were either never printed before or appeared in rare and inaccessible publications — sometimes in different versions and without proper sources. Most of the songs in this book were submitted by readers of Chana and Yosl’s column “Perl fun der yidisher poezye” (Pearls of Yiddish Poetry) in the Yiddish newspaper Der Forverts (The Forward), initiated in October, 1970. Over 25 years, thousands of songs were collected in correspondence and on cassettes from readers throughout the world, and they represent a veritable national Yiddish song archive. Chana Mlotek, in her introduction, writes, “In the course of years the inquiries, contributions and enthusiasm of these readers have kept our own interest unflagging and have reinforced our dedication to this effort. And in recent years our participants have also been augmented by new readers from the former Soviet Russia, who receive our newspaper there or from newly-arrived immigrants in this country and Israel.”
