Tsvey Briv Tsum Lyader Rebn

Two Letters to the Rabbi of Liady
צװײ בריװ צום ליאַדער רבין

This humorous macaronic song consists of two almost identical stanzas with contrasting moods, which are expressed by different interpretations of the vocables “ay-ay-ay.” In the first stanza, the letter writer deplores the sad state of his affairs by singing “ay-ay-ay” with a melancholy sigh. In the second stanza, time has passed and his prayers have been answered–conditions have improved and the syllables are now expressed with resoluteness and joy. The song was published by Menakhem Kiphis in 1925 and later by Chaim Kotylansky and others. It was parodied in the theater song Mayn tayer Jekele, shik mir a tshekele! (My Dear Jackie, Send Me a Check!) words by Jacob Jacobs.

Lyrics

To the little town of Liady –
A period.

In the province of Mogilev –
A period.

To our holy Rabbi Schneerson –
A period.

Oh know here with, O holy rabbi,
That my income is not so ay-ay-ay,
Nor my wife’s health is so ay-ay-ay.
And you, after all, are the great ay-ay-ay!
So-help me!

Refrain:
To the little town of Liady,
In the province of Mogilev,
To our holy Rabbi Schneerson.

To the little town of Liady –
A period.

In the province of Mogilev –
A period.

To our holy Rabbi Schneerson –
A period.

Oh know herewith, O holy rabbi,
That my income is now ay-ay-ay,
And my wife’s health is also ay-ay-ay.
You, after all, are the great ay-ay-ay!
So I thank you!
